BIO
I started life deep in the woods of Canada, but I am not Canadian- it’s a long story. I am a US citizen, grew up in Rochester NY and have lived in Massachusetts for about 35 years. My Canadian years shaped me as an artist who adores nature. I paint mostly in oil, sometimes watercolor and gouache. Since I lost my job and moved to the Berkshires it’s been terrific and very difficult to stay indoors to paint when it is nice out so I spend much more time painting outside all over the area.
I have been a very grateful recipient of grants from the Martha Boschen Porter Fund, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Rochester (NY) Arts Council and NY State Council on the Arts, enjoyed a spectacular visiting artist stay at the American Academy in Rome, artist residencies in Newfoundland and the Dune Shacks of Cape Cod. In 2018 I was included in Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine as “An Artist to Watch”. In June of 2022 I was thrilled to win the People’s Choice Award in Plein Air Magazine! In 2023 I was a top 100 finalist for an award with Plein Air Magazine
STATEMENT
I have always painted what is right around me. When I lived in Boston, on the harbor and did a lot of boating I painted the sea. After many years there I headed for the hills. Now I paint all the things I see on my hikes around the Berkshires. The Berkshires remind me of where I started life, deep in the woods of Canada but I am not Canadian, it’s a long story. I am a US citizen and have been all over but spent the last 35 years in Boston. My Canadian years shaped me as an artist who absolutely adores nature. Another important ingredient in my painting life is the weather. I am truly a weather geek for a number of reasons: when I lived in Boston I did a lot of ocean kayaking and other boating so weather was a big concern. Also I paint outdoors quite a bit when the weather is friendly, lastly in my lifetime I have witnessed big changes in the seasons. So I keep a weather eye and clouds are my other favorite thing to paint.
I am largely self taught. When I was 12 I had a dream and wanted to paint it so I got my paint by numbers and tried, it was awful but at that time there simply was no one around for me to learn from. Since I never give up I kept at it and tried all kinds of things on my own. Decades and life events later I ended up in an accelerated college program whose only goal was to drum realism out of me and turn me into an abstract artist. I’m sure I learned something at college besides how to survive nasty critiques. I went with that for far too long but was never happy with abstraction. Then one day while floating in my kayak on the ocean, the sky and sea were amazing and I wondered “could I paint that?” I did and never looked back. I was so happy to be painting what I loved again after such a long time.
